Credit for Prior Learning
Overview
Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) is a methodology for evaluating students’ prior-learning in order to potentially award credit for learning experiences that are not in themselves credit-bearing. A graduate student may earn CPL credits via a pre-determined program-approved CPL process including, but not limited to, portfolio, challenge exam, or external credential.
Graduate Credit for Prior Learning Policies
- Graduate programs have the option of participating in Credit for Prior Learning; some of our graduate programs will not consider CPL.
- A student who believes they should be eligible to apply for CPL evaluation will work with the graduate program director PRIOR to submitting the Graduate Credit for Prior Learning eForm.
- The combination of CPL approved credits and transfer credits shall not exceed the maximum number of allowable transfer credits.
- A student must be actively enrolled at UWEC to obtain CPL credits.
- The fee for CPL credits at the graduate level is currently $100 for 1-3 credits, $200 for 4-6 credits, and $300 for 7-9 credits. Departments may charge an administrative fee up to $200 for work required to administer the evaluation. These charges are subject to change.
- If CPL credits are awarded, they will be posted on the student's transcript above any transfer coursework, per UW-System policy. Credit will be identified with the matching UWEC course or as elective credit, whichever is most appropriate for the learning demonstrated.
